[W126 Coupe] Dragging transmission on 1985 - 500 SEC by "Robert"

Robert,
My guess is that one of five things has happened:
1) The Vacuum line from the "Modulator" (on the side of your
transmission) is not working properly,
is not connected, or broken, or the vacuum line connection to
the engine (or tranny) is missing
2) The Throttle mechanism (near the rear of the engine
compartment) has missing links, is disconnected,
has broken parts, or is mis-adjusted.
3) Be sure the Vacuum line to the distributor is working...and it
WILL advance the mechanism inside
the distributor. Otherwise...the engine will be very sluggish.
4) The BIG Vacuum line that connects to the Intake area
(passenger side...near the air-horn) is not
connected. OEM connection at this point is weak...use a "spring
clamp" to hold the rubber line on.
5) Low Tranny Fluid...check Tranny Fluid (when warm) and idling
in Park.
Regards,
Larry Martin

FWIW, adding an EGR port isn't difficult.

Have a 1985 500 SEC which went into the shop for one problem-fuel
ignition and came back with another. The mechanic said he drove in
heavy load mode to test the car for 20 miles on the freeway. Now the
car feels like the emergency brake is on all the time and the
transmission is not flowing smoothly between gears. This problem did not
exist when it was brought in.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Robert

Clarify for me what is "heavy load?"
To me that is pulling a 28 foot boat on a trailer or a 33 foot
Airstream.
Was he driving with the brake on?
Seems to me brake caliper is locked or you have collapsed brake hose
which can cause a caliper to lock on a rotor.

charset="us-ascii" I have a set of new, never-mounted headers for sale,
custom made for a 560 SEC. I have been a member of this list for a long
time, and out of loyalty to the list I am offering them here before
posting them on eBay. I'm asking $1400, which is about what they cost to
make in 2003. For those of you who don't know
the story, here it is. Another member of this list supercharged his
car back in 2003. I don't want to post his name without his permission,
but he was quite the celebrity on this list and others as well. Like the
rest of us, he was horrified by the restrictive stock exhaust set-up. He
found a machinist to build and custom-fit headers for his car, and made
several additional sets. They are made of 16-gauge mild steel, 1-3/4
inch diameter, and ceramic coated in silver. The coating is by Jet-Hot,
and is warranted for life. They are a true Tri-Y configuration. The pipe
diameter was optimized for laminar flow over the entire velocity range.
The primary benefit is a big reduction in back pressure. The stock
set-up results in lower power, premature valve-stem failure and the
notorious head gasket leak at the number 8 cylinder. The Jet-Hot coating
will prevent any rust whatsoever and will result in lower under-hood
temperatures, too. I have used it on other cars and have been very
impressed. So what's the power difference? Our esteemed member dyno'd
his supercharged car both before and after replacing the stock manifold
with the headers. Rear wheel horsepower increased from 306.6 to 345.6,
and torque increased from 372.6 to 397.7. That's huge, and it
illustrates just how restrictive our stock exhaust really is. I cannot
guarantee what these headers will do for a non-supercharged car, but I
would expect power gains to be similar--somewhere in the 10% range.
Remember that a stock 560 SEC (US) only puts out 238 hp at the flywheel,
so it needs all the help it can get. So why am I selling them? It's
simple. I live in a smog-regulated place, and these headers don't have
an EGR port. I would have to detach the EGR, and that's a no-no here.

Graham,
Is this in the wood surround by the climate control? I will assume yes.
You first need to remove that console to get at the switch from behind.
To do so, you'll need to remove your ashtray insert, then remove the
ashtray itself (2 screws), then pull out the radio to get at 2 screws at
the bottom of the wood piece, then pull down and out to get the wood
piece forward. Then disconnect all the electrical connections from
behind, pull away the wood piece, replace the switch, and reassemble in
reverse.

Not heard from anyone in a while. Had problems with my email, so changed
it.
Anyway, getting back to the subject, I have recently been having what I
would call lazy shifting with the transmission. There is no slipping and
seems fine on starting off as normal (in 2nd as it does) and also seems
fine by flooring it to get 1st and then back to 2nd. But then (under
normal acceleration) it can't seem to make up it's mind when to shift to
3rd, although this isn't as bad as it is from 3rd to 4th. Even after
reaching a constant speed of say 30mph in 3rd (and the E/S switch set at
E) most of the time it will just stay in 3rd and not drop into 4th.
Sometimes it will, but most of the time I have to blip the throttle a
little, then ease off for it to drop into 4th. Sometimes even this
doesn't work.
Summary is all downshifts seem fine and upshift from 1st to 2nd is
perfect. Upshift from 2nd to 3rd is OK most of the time, but upshift
from 3rd to 4th depends on what mood it's in at the time.
Should I just change my tranny fluid and filter, or is there some other
explanation for this?
Cheers,
Vance

When is the last time you changed your trans oil and filter? If more
than 25-30K miles ago, its time. I found when I switched all my
vehicles over to synthetic they responded quite well and shifted better,
your experience may vary.
