Jim,
I started out with stumbling issues similar to yours. It got progressivly worse until the car was undriveable.
I have an M119 engine in my car, but the EZL (ignition control module) fulfills the same functions.
Anyway, my EZL was intermittently cutting off ignition to one of the cylinder banks.
A new EZL for my engine is $2,800 from MB so I tried an outfit in Florida, 4Mercedes, who claimed to be able to rebuild them for $1,000.
What a disaster.
It took them three weeks to get the EZL back to me and then of course it didn't work. When the ignition wires were unplugged, the badly glued unit came apart.
I bit the bullet and got the new unit from MB.
Not saying you can't get a good used unit or that the EZL for the M117 can't be rebuilt, but buyer beware.
Cheers,
Axel

Subject: [W126 Coupe] 1990 560SEC EZL module
The 560SEC has stalled/shut down on the
road with my wife driving. Engine just stops. Starts right up and is
then ok.
The SEC has about 89K. Replaced the fuel pump relay last April 2008
with a new unit, installed the back up relay to see if maybe the new
relay was faulty.
On my other SEC when the ezl went out -- it would not start at all
until it was replaced.
Are there any warning signs when the EZL starts to fail or is it all at
once? Can they be remanufactured? Has any one used Beckmann to rebuild
one? or should a used one be located and kept on hand?
All suggestions are welcome.
