I'm dealing with a problem on a '87 420SEL (I know it's not a coupe)
running rich. This car has been in my family since new and not driven
very much at all (it has about 22,000 actual miles). Of course after
sitting and the gas going bad in the tank, we've had a problem. About
every other time we run it something sticks in the fuel system and we
get black smoke out the tail pipe and very poor fuel mileage. We have
drained all the gas and refilled with fresh -added Seafoam (fuel
additive/cleaner). I've checked the following:
Cold start device
Fuel Pressure regulator
Oxygen sensor
unplugged throttle sensor & what ever that other device on the left
side of the fuel distributer is (EMH FFC ?!?)
Ignition, plugs etc.
When I put a meter on it, the value jumps between 50 - 0. All I can
guess is something is sticking in the fuel distributer, but I've ran a
couple of tanks of gas and fuel conditioner through it and still no
luck. I'd like to get this resolved for my father (he is pestering me
to fix it), but I suggested he NOT take it to the local dealer. The
problem comes and goes. Any one ever have a similar problem on a car
that has sat without being driven?
Dan
