[W126 Coupe] C class advise

In the process of buying my wife a 1999 C class for running around in.
Need advice on the prefered motor. 280 (6) or should we stay with the 4 
banger.
Durability, economics and comfort is the priority in order.
Any one have any experience with these cars? Critical issues to look for?
