Jonathan,
I gave it a few more runs with the trans upright again, and still don't
seem to be getting it seated properly.
When it goes the furthest I've been able to get it to go, it's sitting
13/16" from the lip of the bell housing to the mounting faces of the
TC. The problem is that the TC face of the flex plate is at 1 1/8" from
the mounting surface on the rear of the engine!
From what I can tell by spinning things around, then pulling the TC
back off, the pump is engaging the TC spindle (the two notches on the
rim of the TC shaft). The front pump splines always end up directly in
line with the TC notches when I lift the TC out.
I measured the different flex plates between the two engines I have
here, arriving at the same depth measurements. The same was true for
the depth from the engine mating surface to the flex plate, and from the
transmission mating surface to the TC mounting tabs.
With one of my neighbors spinning the TC, I spun the tail shaft, and
vise versa as well.
All in all, I'm at a loss, and considering a trip to a trans rebuilder
or one of the local indy shops, just to see if they know some trick to
this task.
Thanks again for any ideas, I'm stumped.
