Hi Jas,
I did not keep notes on this modification so I cannot provide the
specific terminals I worked with on the 83 ignition switch. But, here
is pretty much what I did. I disconnected the battery, then removed the
IC, knee bolster and headlamp switch and its harness. I peeled back the
rubber boot that covers the screw terminals on the back of the switch
(this is only present on the early MB's). I had tested each terminal
(live & careful with battery connected) for voltage presence with
ignition on and for the path to the fogs. Then with batt disconnected,
I removed this one wire lead from the headlamp switch that feeds power
to the positive side of the fogs lamps and wired it to a single pole,
double throw (SPDT) relay normally open (N.O.) terminal. The relay was
rated 12VDC, 12amps - I pulled the related link for you below. Not sure
if I used the 912 or 912B. Both will work, just can't remember which
one I used to handle the MB wiring gauge. I kind of keep lots of Elk
gear around for projects I do for work and so on. I then took the
trigger side of the relay and routed it through the rear courtesy switch
(circuit to rear courtesy lamp isolated and discarded safely behind the
center console. I then wired a 12VDC (ignition ON) positive source off
of the ignition switch to the common side of the relay. Now when the
ignition is on and the courtesy lamp switch is on the fogs are on. The
last item I added was a 12vdc indicator lamp set into a spare idiot
light holder in the IC and powered off of the fog circuit on the relay,
so that when the fogs are on you know they are on. I dampened this
indicator light ( a spare I pulled from another IC) as it was pretty
bright at night.
Hope this helps, if I come across the terminal #'s or letters on that
headlamp switch I'll let you know.
Regards,
Dick
