[W126 Coupe] check engine light

We dont have the check engine light here in the UK but im thinking idle control valve?

  Hi gang,

  Today was the first day I drove my 89 560SEL "project car" for any length of time other than around the block.  Short story is I recently did a drivetrain swap on the car with a known good 91 SEC motor and recently rebuilt transmission.  On the way to work today, about 5-10 minutes into the drive, I noticed the check engine light on the dash flickered faintly, very briefly, two different times.  Nothing else interesting on the way to work, about a 45 minute drive.  On the way home, about 15 minutes into the drive, I noticed it briefly feeling as it wanted to hesitate.  Noticed the check engine light come on briefly again.  Nothing much else on the way home. Got home and left it running, as I intended to check the trans fluid.  While in the garage getting a rag (car was out in the driveway) I suddenly heard the sound of an engine revving.  At first I didn't think much because my wife was just leaving.  But when I returned to th e car I noticed it wasn't running.  Restarted it, noticed the check engine light come on, the idle briefly rise, then fall, then stall again.  Heard some clicking type sounds at this point in the engine bay on the pass side, somewhere near the alternator, maybe the vacuum switchover valve area.

  What do I start checking to see what might be causing this?  O2 sensor?  Would that cause the surge then stall condition as well or are they unrelated problems?  Seems to be related considering how it felt on the way home (like it wanted to stall and light came on) and then sitting in yard (giving no gas) it did the same then died.

  Any suggestions?
