[W126 Coupe] SEC Ignition blew up

Hein;

If the ignition module had gone south, the starter would have turned the engine over but wouldn't start (no spark). From your description, sounds like you're getting no power to the solenoid... could very well be the switch at the back of the ignition assembly. I suppose you have tried turning the key to the starter position a couple of hundred times already, right?
Getting the switch out can be a bit ugly. Josh has pretty well covered everything. I'd disconnect the battery also. In addition to that, removing the ignition lock boss and the ignition tumbler will give a tiny bit more wiggle room (see: How to Remove Ignition Tumbler). If you decide you want to replace the steering lock/ignition lock housing complete, you'll be switching the ignition tumbler over anyway. Alternatively, you can always permanently install your nifty starter button under the dash and use it to start the car (memories of '50's British cars... turn the ignition "on" and press the starter button). To get at the switch you can remove the knee-panel under the dash to SEE it from underneath AND pull the instrument pod completely out to SEE it from the top. It's handy to have access from both directions. I'll see if I have any pictures of this and send directly to you. (I have trouble with this site limitations re: pictures) -Bellamy

Bellamy,
I bypassed the ignition module by connecting one wire to the battery and the other to the starter solenoid. When you push the button
to which these two wires are connected in my hand the car fires up………hmmm, second thought….had to turn the ignition to the on position.

BTW, I went ahead and installed a brand new bosch starter that I had stashed away in my good junk section of the basement. Same thing…..but I could have screwed up the install. Those rear bolts are a bastard to get in with the exhaust in the way. Connecting the wires is also not easy when rust and dirt keeps falling into your eyes.

If the starter solenoid is the problem the car should not fire up at all, right?

I think the ignition switch itself is the problem.
How hard is it to replace the ignition switch itself? Somehow I think that removing the steering wheel is like sticking a coconut up an ants arse.

Hein; If you jippo'd the starter and it fired up right fine, the ignition module is OK. If the car has been sitting for a long time the problem could be the ignition switch itself (less probable) or the starter solenoid (more probable), or connections (unplug and replug everything). After running the car it still won't restart? If it was Lucas you'd simply introduce the solenoid to the big hammer. However, the German stuff takes personal offense really easily. You may have to take the starter out. -17°C ? -Bellamy

Talk about SEC….

Decided it’s time after sitting for four years to fire up the SEC, check it out for a month or so and maybe drive it for the summer.

Turn the key and nothing happens.

Jippo the starter and she fires up right nice.

Time perhaps for a new ignition? Can’t see the ignition control module PMSing….

Any thoughts?

Hein
