Gentlemen, enough Mustang bashing. Here's my Mustang story. I have a 1965 Mustang GT Fastback 289 K-Code sleeper, looking stock, except for the ride low ride height. Internally its virtually a GT350.
On one Sunday morning I was on my way to a Mustang car show. I came to a red light going eastbound on Sunset Blvd. Just before the entrance to the 405 fwy. As I waited, a brand new Lexus Coupe pulled up to my left. The northbound on-ramp to the 405 here is a 90 deg. right-hander which leads to a hairpin, then a straight onto the freeway. For some reason I felt the balding fortyish gentleman with his young son in the passenger seat was going to gun it and pass me and dive right into my path to make the right-hander. These instinctive feelings almost always come true. I proceeded to engage the gear into first and watched for the other signal to turn yellow. As soon as our’s turned green I stomped on the gas and popped the clutch. The 715cfm Holleys sucked gas and air at a tremendous rate and made this indecent sucking sound that resulted in the gas gauge needle to dance back and forth on the dial. The car lunged forward like a lineman on a quarterback blitz, but so did the Lexus with its silky smooth automatic.
However, when I shifted to second I knew I had him and I dove into the corner first. I had to brake hard and correct at this moment because of the narrow turn that came up real quick. I stayed on the outside and clipped the apex and then proceeded to punch the car out of the hairpin and onto the straightaway leading onto the 405. As I shifted to third and fourth, I caught myself with an ear-to-ear grin as I watched the Lexus get smaller and smaller in my rearview mirror. Then it dawned on me. A Japanese Guy in a ’65 Mustang just smoked an American guy in a brand new Lexus!!! So go figure, but that ought to teach him a lesson. I have a feeling, I can beat my own stock '91 560 SEC with this Mustang.
