Hi All,

Yes its definately true... In those days AMG would do anything you asked providing you had the $$

In fact there is a guy here in the UK who has an original AMG SEL that he is converting to original spec AMG Manual Box.. he is buying the box and ancillaries from the USA and tis costing him in excess of $10,000

Many Thanks & Regards

To make the conversion these days I'd expect it to run in excess of 10K.

I think the $9,300 figure came from the seller's ebay ad that Bruce attached. It does seem awfully high but $5,000 for a 5spd is no bargain either.

Well, back in 1984 the USD to Dm exchange rate was more like 1:2.5 so 12,500 DM was about $5,000.

Certainly not the couple of hundred bucks for Detroit iron back in the early '70s, but about half of the almost $10k you suggest.

Interesting car Bruce. I hope the guy disowned the "son" who effed up the car. At $9,300.00 / $12,500 DM no wonder there aren't many manuals out there. The marketing strategy apparently was to gouge those who had more money than sense. Contrast that to GM back in the muscle car days when a Muncie rock crusher 4 spd could be had for maybe a couple hundred bucks on the options list.

I've got a 1982 us-legal euro 280sel that was owned for a while by amg west out in denver. part of the amg "kit" they put on it (body kit, recaros, suspension, etc) was a 5-speed manual.

jonathan is bringing it back to life now at his shop.

it's here:

Rich,

He may very well have been correct.

Mercedes did not offer manual transmissions for any of their V8s, only on their straight-sixes.

However, AMG offered manual transmissions.

I don't rember who the manufacturer was, but it was either Getrag or ZF.

In my 1984 German AMG catalog the manual transmission is offered at 12,500 DM. By comparison, the widebody conversion is 25,000 DM.

Not many clients took the manual transmission option. I've only ever seen one sedan with a stick and never a coupe.

All,

I spoke to a guy this afternoon at the local parts store who said when he was stationed in Germany back in the day, he saw an AMG SEC that had a manual trans! After diplomatically suggesting he was mistaken, the guy swore up and down the car had a stick. I seriously doubt MB produced and optional manual trans SEC for the German market, but did AMG ever offer a stick as an option?
