[W126 Coupe] Hello! License Plate lights wont work!

I cannot get the lights to work- put new light bulbs, and fuses- is there a  
secret to this on this car? I cant drive it at night till i figure this out-  
there is a black wire directly behind the carpeting that covers the inside of  
the trunk, and it looks like the plug that goes into a SL hardtop to connect 
for  the rear window defroster...other than that i cant get at this thing it 
is like  molded to the car- I removed the top lip of the trunk cover but that 
was about  it- anything helpful is greatly appreciated!
