I have holes in my old and rusting exhaust (next thing planned for the 
car project, that!), and it still idles around 700 rpm, so I'm going to 
say that it's not likely.

I did find that a faulty or missing throttle position switch will cause 
your idle to run around 1000rpm though, while troubleshooting my car 
recently.
