My quarter's worth...for $20K-$30K you can find an 500E/E500, condition 2,
with 50K-75K miles, that's appreciating in value daily, limited production, has
a much more interesting history, is one of the most thoroughly sorted out
model series that MBenz has ever produced, is a guaranteed conversation piece
due to the Porsche connection and is an absolute kick in the backside to
drive. Plus, it mostly looks like a granny car until you light up the rear tires;
an absolute Q-ship when you're hunting for Mustangs at stop lights.

I'm considering buying a 2000 E55 AMG with 178,000 km (110,000 miles) to
replace my SEC. Any thoughts on this car?
Thanks.

No filter under the dash in a W126. FYI, I left the AC electric (auxiliary)
fan in place and functional on my SEL in order to assist the dual-electric
fans. Did you keep yours running??
In slow city traffic my R134 560SEL with the dual-electric fans still won't
freeze you. I need to be going 20-30mph before that happens, but... with the
fans running, I can stop in Vegas 100+F heat and the AC still keeps me cool.
Without the fans, the AC just didn't keep up and you could feel the outlet
temps rising at a stop light.
IIRC, the R134 system, when properly charged, still has some bubbles in the
sightglass. A full liquid stream is a slight overcharge, which will decrease
the cooling capability of the system.

Hey Peter!
Glad to see a posting from you. There are a lot of MB knowledgeable people
on here. I had lost your phone number so was unable to call to let you know
about the last Long Boat Key get together. We'll definitely let you know about
the next one. Maybe Jono will get to come down. He's a wealth of info on the
W126s, is always willing to answer any questions and has fair prices on parts
for them.

I have a 1991 560 SEC. It has 48K miles. Perfect mechanical condition,
books and records since new. All original. (Paint 7 Interior 9.5) I have
heard rumblings that despite the mileage, replacing the timing chain on cars
of this age is advisable. Thought somebody out there might have some similar
experience. Thank you, Peter pdweiss62 at aol.com

Franco,
I think you sent your weather our way! I was there last summer and it was
hot, but geez, its around 100 here the past few days too in PA!
No filter I know of in the cabin. If your system was evacuated and
recharged I'm assuming the pressures are okay (meaning correct amount of freon) and
everything else is working ok? You can try hitting the recirculation button
on the console to see if that helps (shuts off outside air source) and may
help cool it down at over 100 degree temps!

If you like you can come have a look @ the dual Spal fan install we'll be
doing on a 500E 6.0L Renntech that's in the shop. The build quality on the
Spal's is really quite impressive!
