I had a similar problem as you mention "shutters and jerks". Mine had
nothing to do with the transmission though.
I got my car on a rainy day and was driving it home and found I could not
accellerate past 120 KM/h (about 65 Mph). If I tried, it just vibrated and
acted like it wasn't getting any gas. The same happened after visits to
the car wash (but only a short time).
Periodically it would turn over (when it was wet out) but not catch. I went
through distributor caps, etc. This went on for three years!
Finally last year (I had been to mercedes and they couldn't find it!) I just
decided on a lark to replace the spark plug cables. The car started
immediately and has never been a problem since.
We found that one if the cables was was arcing against the motor. They
were the original cables and not very flexible (why Mercedes didn't
find this is \
somewhat of a mystery to me -- they did replace the coil though). I guess you
would have had to be looking for this to find it. But then again
with a car thats 26
years old--it would have been one of the first things to look for.
Moral of the story--check the rubber parts!
Andy
