[W126 Coupe] K&N Air Filters

Now THAT is a report!! Don't you just hate it when scientifically derived data screws up your suppositions and preconceived notions?? :-)

OK, K&N filters are not particularly good. Since I'm building a vehicle that should have very low usage/mileage and will be driven only on paved roads in (hopefully) dry conditions, that makes a choice of a high quality paper filter look to be the proper choice here. A K&N might be satisfactory, but paper would be better.

One thing to keep in mind, they showed flow restrictions across the filter at 350 scfm and they all flowed within 2" of water of each other. That is a VERY small value. 2" water is 0.072 psi or 3.7 mm/Hg.

Mike

I decided not to get a K&N for mine after several bad reviews... see this interesting article

Thanks Steve. I'll need to get home and measure the LS6 intake diameter to see what's needed. What's the intake diameter on the filter? Is it meant to sit on an intake assembly or fit on the end of a tube?

I'm planning on running a big intake tube (~3") over behind the passenger headlight and do something there with the filter. I believe I can adapt the SEC cold-air intake on that side to feed a sheet-metal delineated chamber, in which the filter will sit. It should be something like the secondary firewall, that is high enough to meet the hood. That's the plan, anyway.

Mike, if Eddie's does not work for you, I have one that fit my M103. It is 3 - 3.25" tall, and about 15" in diameter.

Eddie,
I need one for the LS6. If it has a large intake diameter, about 3", I'll take it.

I have a K&N, and I think it’s crap, I went back to paper filters once it was time to oil up the K&N. Did not improve anything except make the car sound better. Carl did a swap in test on a dyno and discovered the K&N robbed his car of power, but both our cars have been tuned to different levels.

BTW, if anyone wants it, $20 plus shipping. Clean and oil it yourself.

Regards,

Eddie
