[W126 Coupe] Oil Pressure gauge readings...

Your oil pressure gauge is very sensitive to RPM. A change of 50 RPM at idle will have a significant effect on your oil pressure reading. But remember, none of the gauges on your cluster are exactly what you would call "scientific" quality. In fact, the temp, fuel and oil pressure gauges are all somewhat crappy. That's why the gauge dials don't have any detailed scales.

Mercedes will say your idle may be 500-650, and oil pressure should stay above 1. The 560's appear to normally be around 1.5. The 380 usually is closer to, but above 1. When you accelerate, the gauge should peg at 3 instantly which only tells you your oil pressure is OVER 3. If it doesn't reach 3, then you might have a problem.

When you brake to a stop your RPM may dip slightly below normal idle momentarily and hence the oil pressure drops below "normal" also.

You are likely right. If you changed the gauge, it COULD read very slightly different. If you are really concerned, you can fit a more accurate shop oil pressure gauge to a port on the engine.- Bellamy

Hi everybody, Can anybody remind me what the oil pressure gauge should be reading at tickover when the engine is at normal operating temperature? Also - when doing long runs on the motorways, then pulling into a fuel station is it normal for the gauge to read slightly lower than normal when coimg to a stop? I've recently changed the dial cluster as my temperature gauge had a fault of being erratic when the temperature went over 85oC - and i'm hoping its just the diffence in the gauges rather than a larger problem somewhere under the bonnet! I have my fingers and other bodily parts crossed that it is just the gauge! Thanks Jon 560SEC560SEL
