[W126 Coupe] turn signal issue

Markus - Not sure what your state law requires in reference to turn signal
colors. When I purchased my '90 560SEC it had smoked front and rear lenses
with clear turn signal lamps in the front and back and had orange brake
lights. I checked the Florida laws and they allow clear or amber turn lamps
in the front but require amber/orange turn signals in the rear. I quickly
replaced the rear turn lamps with the chrome/off amber/orange on lamps. To
my amazement they DO NOT require brake lights to be red. They allow red or
orange brake lights. I am very surprised that I have never been pulled over
for the orange brake lights. Just in case I carry a copy of the Florida law
section covering turn signal colors.

the way in reference to the past subject of pinstripes I had mine removed
from the normal location and had them redone just below the crease halfway
down the side body as shown in this pic.

Don't forget about the Get-Together in Longboat Key/Sarasota. Florida this
coming Saturday. Details at: http://www.mymbsec.com/events.htm#feb08

By the way Ellen aka Legs, Starcruiser (Master Detailer) will be riding down
with me from Clearwater. She detailed my car last week and it looks
fabulous. Here is a pic of Ellen and her work:

Markus,

Good to hear you found the problem.

As for the light bulbs, I have a set of "clear" Osrams in the back, but I
have yet to find a "clear" amber two-filament bulb for the front. Right now
I just live with having amber bulbs in my clear front indicator lights.

Axel,

Spot on! I put the original bulbs back in and all is well. Guess the new
bulbs that came with the clear corners are E-code, meaning they are single
filament. I had already swapped out the new connectors as they had one less
prong on the plug but the bulb was still confusing things.

All is well again, now its just time to find 4 bulbs that look
"clear/silver" and blink orange instead of white/yellow!

Hi Markud,

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Did the indicator lights work properly before you made any changes to them?

I don't recall whether the 560 SEL project car was a driver before you
started working on it.

That the rear lights flash at twice the normal rate after you disconnected
the front indicator lights is normal. I guess you could say that you've
eliminated the rear indicator lights as the source of the problem.

The front indicator light have two-filament bulbs and serve as both corner
lights and indicator lights. The rear indicator lights have a single
filament as there is a separate bulb for the corner lights at the rear. It
sounds like the front lights are confused about the difference between their
corner- and indicator light duties.

Subject: [W126 Coupe] turn signal issue

Hi gang,

I have a question about turn signals. I'm finishing up my "project car", a
1989 560SEL I just finished doing an engine and transmission swap on. I
went to take it for a drive today, and when I turned the lights on, the turn
signal "symbols" on the dash BOTH lit up green and stayed that way (not
blinking, just solid on). Went outside, and all 4 turn signals were ON, not
blinking, but on as well. Then I tried the hazard switch, and everything
blinked as they should. I disconnected the two front turn signals as I had
just put clear corners and orange bulbs in (although I reused the connectors
since the new ones didn't match the wiring/plugs), and of course now the
bulb out indicator is on in the dash and when I use the turn signals, just
the rears work really fast, since the fronts are "out".

Where should I start looking to see what might be wrong?

Thanks,
