[W126 Coupe] very big petrol smell

Hello.
I want to know if somebody can help me with a smelling problem, I have a 500 SEC 1984 .I heard an air outlet in the rear part  and I realized that there were like two round shaped noise absorbers, and they were very rusty. I took them away connecting with a direct tube. I thought that could be a noise problem, but it was no so, the only problem that I realized was, that in a garage when starting the engine and after  a few moments I couldn't keep my eyes open and can't breath. What I don't know if that things that were taken off, were for recycling the air comming from the engine backwards inside, or by the time, started a VALVE problem and the petrol comes out directly from the injection or it has an INJECTION problem. I'll apreciate any comment about this.
