[W126 Coupe] Dash Wood: Replace/Refurbish

I redid my own.? When I saw wht the cost of replacement was, I?decided to do ?it myself.? The key is keeping dust out when you finish it.? I had very good luck using the inside of a big box that was wet down to apply polyuathane spray to aviod brush marks and am very happy with the finished product.

Does anyone know a good source to either refurbish (or replace) dash
wood? I have a 1984 Mercedes 500SEC that has been pretty much restored,
but I need the dash wood (Burlwood). I have a replacement part from the
driver's door to the glove box (looks great). BUT....I don't have a
replacement for the glove box wood (it looks pretty bad). Any
suggestions appreciated.

Larry Martin

Larry,

I have an excellent re-finisher locally should you be interested.
You'll really want to do them all together so the colour/look is
congruent throughout.

Any questions feel free to get in touch via blueridgemb at gmail.com or 404

I would definitely agree on the W124 wagon... Love that car!
My second pick would be the Subaru Outback AWD... Aesthetically not bad but
excellent utility car...
I currently drive a 96 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4X4 in the winter which I like very
much too. Great reliable in-line 6 motor and much improved comfort with a couple
of Recaro leather seats. The stock seats are trash.
Good luck & congratulations on the rug rat!

If you are a member in Mercedes Benz Club, most dealers will give you a discount
on original equipment of usually 10-20%.

Markus, that last comment just threw your gas prices argument out the window.
As nice as they are the SECs are not known as fuel efficient.

I agree with most people not knowing how to drive them. Especially in Colorado.
You would think for a place that has good winters most every year, people would
learn how to drive in the snow. Nope, still too many idiots out there.

Another reason for an SUV is cargo room.

My personal opinion is that SUVs are overrated, gas guzzlers, and most of them
plain ugly. And unfortunately most owners don't know how to drive them either.

Especially if you are buying something newer that you plan to keep for a while,
you may want to consider things like where the price of gas is headed, etc.
Maybe an AWD car if you really want that feature, plenty of those around (Audi,
Jag, MB, Ford, etc). If you don't mind something older, get a MB diesel wagon!

I don't know what I'd buy if I had to buy a "new car" nowadays. Oh yeah, wait a
minute, I do...that's why I keep buying older MBs (W126's!).

Fat Croat,

Trust me on this one brother, it's not the back seat of an SEC that is is a pain
in the ass, it's the kids.
Both of mine managed to grow up back there, just my two cents...:))

Honda Odyssey, reliable, roomy, good gas mileage, stick a set of good snow
tires on it for the winter. Great resale value when the kids get a little
older and you really realize you don't want it. Not AWD, but will get the
job done
BTW picked up a Audi A4 Quattro, Tipronic this year, stuck a set of
Hankook Ipikes on it. Unbelievable traction and control in snow, ice, wet.
Fun to drive level about 8 out of 10. All wheel drive.....what a blast

A Long Island boy. I have family in Comack, and my uncle used to keep his boat
up at Montauk Point. We have quite a few of the same "never see off road" SUVs
here in Colorado. It is kind of like my other favorite, the little old lady
driving the E55 AMG 45 in the right lane.

With all the off road trials and camping here, I wouldn't mind having a Land
Rover Defender to screw around in.

As far as sliding the car around. I would do that in the SEC, the SEL, the work
truck, whatever. I grew up having to chase everybody on diirt back roads. They
had old trucks with 350s and 454s. I had a 1980 Mazda 626. The only way I
could keep up was by out driving them around the corners.

I and a few people I know have Jeep Grand Cherokee. I need mine to tow
my boat in the summer. They drive excellent, great motor, great interior
& very comfortable, are great in snow, except, um, the tranny goes to
crap by 50K miles. So if you don't mind spending $3K every 50K miles to
replace the tranny, and 12 MPG if you are lucky - it's a great car.

On the foreign side, Subaru has been making excellent 4WD cars and
wagons for decades - extremely reliable, relatively affordable, and get
good milage (25-30+ is normal).

But I have to be honest, I don't understand our generation's need for
SUVs. I live on Long Island NY, the yuppie capital of the world as far
as I am concerned. Everyone has to have the biggest SUV, go drive to the
diner and to the mall. The most off-road they see is a puddle in the
road, and most swerve around those as well. The only reason I have it is
for my boat.

I have 2 kids, and we drove them around from birth, first in my Mustang,
then in a Cougar. Yes, it is a little inconvenient, but with the price
of gas, and I don't care what SUV you buy (even 4 or 6 cyl), you are not
going to get more than 20 MPG if you are lucky - it is simply a matter
of aerodynamics - they have a large profile, and that is what you are
pushing through the wind. Personally I feel than unless you are a
doctor, police, firefighter, or other critical - on demand person, or
you live in a real remote location, most roads are cleared within hours
of a snow-fall. Actually I enjoy sliding my SEC around on a snowy road -
I think it makes you a better driver as you learn how to get yourself
out of trouble. Most people in SUVs have no clue and think the car is
invincible until they are upside down in a snow bank, and then feel it's
the car maker's fault.

So my long-winded answer is I've had good experience with Subaru wagon.
You may want to look at 4wd wagons for the best compromise in MPG &
utility. Hope it helps.

Thank You,

I would say the rhythm method did work! It was a great story how we found out
too because we were able to tell my father the day we found out which was 12.17
and he passed away on Christmas Eve. This is our first child, but since I have
two sisters, this is going to be the first Fatovic grandchild. He was ecstatic
about the news. Plus I am the last one to carry on my family name. So I am
going to need to have at least one son!

I have always liked my Jeep Grand Cherokee (and Cherokee before that).
Just about the right size and power (with a 4 litre 6 cyl) and have
ALWAYS given me good service. I think the SEC and Grand Cherokee is a
great combination, luxury and utility. The only other SUV I would
consider would be something by Toyota (and I really don't know what
others experience is with them). A Mercedes GL would be nice, but WAY
too pricey. Would NOT even consider anything Nissan, Ford or Mazda
(from MY experience).

Markus, that last comment just threw your gas prices argument out the
window. As nice as they are the SECs are not known as fuel efficient.

I agree with most people not knowing how to drive them. Especially in
Colorado. You would think for a place that has good winters most every
year, people would learn how to drive in the snow. Nope, still too many
idiots out there.

Another reason for an SUV is cargo room.

My personal opinion is that SUVs are overrated, gas guzzlers, and most of
them plain ugly. And unfortunately most owners don't know how to drive them
either.

Especially if you are buying something newer that you plan to keep for a
while, you may want to consider things like where the price of gas is
headed, etc. Maybe an AWD car if you really want that feature, plenty of
those around (Audi, Jag, MB, Ford, etc). If you don't mind something older,
get a MB diesel wagon!

I don't know what I'd buy if I had to buy a "new car" nowadays. Oh yeah,
wait a minute, I do...that's why I keep buying older MBs (W126's!).

No but I can give you some opinions on a 21 speed mountain bike.
When it's too cold and there's too much snow and ice to ride it I drive my old
Volvo 240 Wagon it'll go through anything.
When the weather is perfect I drive my 560 SEC and when the weather is perfect
and I have some shopping to do I take the Volvo 960 Wagon. My newest car is a
1995 (the 960) and I never shop for cars I don't have to because what I have
will last me right up until the time I throw in the towel and beyond.

Are you talking the ledge? Usually when it leaks the water get in and rusts
that ledge out, which means taking out the window, having that ledge cut out
(or repaired) and the window put back in with new seals (or replaced if the
glass itself is bad too). I just had it done on my SEC.

Well, the glass runs about 1100, and rust repair is very much a case by
case basis. One may have just a bit of surface rust that just needs
tending/prepping. While others can have half the sheet metal missing
underneath. I've heard anywhere from 1500 to 3K depending on just how
much work was needed.
