Hah! 4 wheel drives who needs them. I used to drive the highway between
Buffalo NY and Cleveland OH which runs parallel to lake Erie.
In the winter this particular stretch, especially between Buffalo and Erie
PA suffers from severe snow falls caused by lake effect snow.
Many vehicles get stuck in the median every time there's a snow fall and
most of them 4x4's. These vehicles have far better traction and can reach
higher speeds on snow and ice. The downside is that they stop no better than
conventional vehicles and all the more they end up in the ditch.
This combined with the false sense of safety and security is a dangerous mix
particularly when there's a real hot-shot behind the wheel who thinks he's
got the world by the tail because he drives a 4x4.
Real safety is in the balance of a vehicle. Traditionally American made rear
wheel drive cars are terrible in the snow. Too much power and too light on
the driving end. For years I have driven Volvo 240 wagons, heavy cars for
their size but well balanced. I have never had any problems driving in even
the worst snowstorm even with ordinary or all weather tires. Listen to
Jonathan, The "T" wagon is much like a Volvo and I'm sure that's a good bet
if you want to stay with a M-B.
