Thank you Gerry for the complete step by step instructions especially step 11. And thank you Markus, Jonathan and Mike.? I got a real nice burl wood steering wheel for Christmas which I plan to install but didn't want to take it to a mechanic if it was possible for me to DIY. Thanks to you guys, it seems entirely possible. I have installed many after market steering wheels like Nardi and Momo which is a no-brainer but never one with an airbag.
Cheers,

Here are the proper steps:?
?
1) extend steering wheel as far out toward you as you can with the electrical adjustment lever; have steering wheel/front wheels in a straight line as car is parked?
2) disconnect battery?
3) remove front passenger carpet, and floor panel underneath dash (held on by a single 10mm nut)?
4) find the airbag control unit; disconnect the red plug that goes into it?
5) unscrew the two Torx screws holding the airbag on from the rear of the steering wheel (feel for the holes with your fingers; having wheel out lets you also see the holes if you contort)?
6) pull airbag off of steering wheel and disconnect the plug that goes into the metal plate on the back of it?
7) mark position of steering wheel with a pencil or marker for correct position when you replace it?
8) remove "big nut" that holds steering wheel on -- will take either a breaker bar (what I use -- a piece of pipe over a socket wrench handle) or an air-wrench?
9) do what you need to do?
10) assembly is reverse of disassembly; use Loctite or other thread-locker on steering wheel nut/bolt; and torque it down HARD. Careful to line the steering wheel up correctly when you put it on.?
11) go have a beer. Or three.?
