Mine did the same thing at 95K. I service the transmission every 30K new filter and fluid. I added 1 bottle of lucas trasmission fix. Problem solved. Car now has over 210K no problems, no clunk in reverse anymore. You can get it at auto zone or any local auto parts. Hey for around 11 bucks what do you have to loose? Everytime I service the tranny I add 1 bottle of lucas. Shifting was also improved in forward gears as well. Stealership looked at it when I took it in at 95K, they said I needed a new tranny. They are still amazed I dont have any problems, and the clunk is gone in reverse ! They want to know what I did. I just laughed.... :)

"O" rings become hard for a few reasons, not just age. Overheating the transmission either by towing, mountain climbing in hot weather. low oil level or not replacing the oils as required (neglect). It is possible to keep "O" rings plyable by having your transmission flushed from time to time using a product called Quick Clean the install an additive called ATC Plus both items by BG products.
The Quick clean will remove all residue in the thransmission during the flush with special equipment. The additive will swell the seals and "O" rings and keep them pliable plus a long list of other benefits like prevent and even stop leaks.
It cost me $175.00 to have this procedure done on my Volvo 960. In the spring I'll have the same done to my SEC.
Happy new year,
Carl

Concur - it's about to die and needs a rebuild!

FYI, when my '87 560SEL tranny died a couple of years ago, it completely quit after backing out of a parking slot. Instantly no forward, no reverse. I asked the rebuilder what actually failed and he just walked over and pulled an o-ring off a part, then proceeded to break it into pieces. An MB tranny of this era now has hard, brittle o-rings in it.

Later,
Mike R.

Hello Mike,

Sadly, there isn't anything you can do..what you are describing is the initial signs of a transmission that's on it's way out. Fortunately, even if you lose reverse you'll still have your forward gears. My advice would be to try to park the car as though you do not have reverse..only using it when you Need it will help lengthen it's life.

In order to fix the problem the transmission needs to come and re-done.

On my 1988 560SEC the auto transmission (original) works great in forward gears, with very smooth change-ups. I’ve had the trans fluid changed at recommended intervals. But on selecting reverse gear there is a big clunk and the car initially jolts backwards, sometimes quite violently, with or without the brake pedal pressed.
I’ve searched the archives and can’t see anything specific to reverse gear. Does anyone know if there is an adjustment or anything to remedy this ?
I’d not want to do anything that may affect the forward gears as they are currently very smooth, but appreciate any help if anyone else has had this.
Cheers,
Mike
