We sell Nexens here in the UK at our garage, have used them many times... they are a good tyre... maybe not up to the branded makes, but still value for money..

Many Thanks & Regards

Hello,

After reading up on this site as well as all the sites I could access, I purchased H&Rs 18x8 AMG Monoblocks on the web. I did not want to spend money on this car now and decided to do shocks and sway bars and possible conversion to standard shocks in the rear later. I consulted my friend Arnie who owns Globe Tires in Los Angeles and although he didn't like the fact that I purchased the parts on the web he said he'll take care of it because he knows I'm cheap. When I went to pick the car up I was horrified to see that he installed these unbelievably cheap, previously unheard of tires called NEXEN, made in Korea.

Now I have no experience with Hankook or other Korean tires but I have my doubts and I thought at least he would install Contis or something. In any case the tires were only $110 a piece. That got me terribly worried that I will have a blow out or it must have below-par ill-mannered handling characteristics but Arnie told me I'm going to like these tires. The car of course looked a 100% better and Arnie told me he did not have to change any OEM bushings or spring shims because they were good. Immediately I realized the car was much stable and sure footed around town and retaining the original shocks, it lost none of the ride comfort.

Then came the ultimate test. Shortly before Christmas I went to visit my friend livin off of Mulholland drive. It had just rained in the morning and the roads had some dry and wet corners in the shade, I commuted using Mulholland before so I am familiar with all the corners. To my surprise, these Nexen held up real well in both wet and dry. In fact I was unable to even make it chirp before slight understeer would come out. The tires do not rub and I have a very comfortable ride and a good handling car, so I have decided to just keep this setup.

QUESTION: What is tire pressure for ZR rated tires are you running for these cars?

It all depends on the tire. I have my 18x8.5" rims shod with some Hankook Ventus HRII 245/40/18 HR rated tires and they're fine on the SEL. A little bit firm but SWMBO doesn't find them objectionable.

I'm planning on buying another set of 18x8.5" rims for the FrankenBenz and those will have to have ZR (or higher) rated tires on them. I'm expecting that ride (with the H&Rs on the SEC) to be VERY hard.

I agree with Jay “17” is much better for ride and tire wear. I am getting
Twice the mileage with the same tire as I did with “18”’s. I had 18’s
For 80 K miles and now 17’s for over 40 K.

That is very subjective! I have 18X9 rear, 18X8 front on my SEC and love them. Can be a little harsh on rough roads. There are some who won't go higher than 17". Depends on your driving style, shape of suspension, tires you use and the roads you will drive on. Would be great if you could find someone close to you with different setups so you can "test drive" them!

My ex-wife, bless her heart, has given me a voucher to purchase a new set of mag wheels and tyres for my 1988 560SEC as a Christmas present. My question is what is the best size rim and tyre to suit my coupe?

Warwick Lind,

Dear MB Coupe members - I just joined your group this year and am very anxioius to purchase a 1991 560 SEC. I am in Northern Virginia and have been searching high and low for the "right" auto. My email is below, please contact me OR please point me in the right direction to find the vehicle I want - dealerships seem very indifferent and E-bay doesn't do it for me. HELP!

Thanks and Happy New Year!

Contact Bruce Mendel.

He specializes in mint condition, low mileage W126 cars and I believe he has a coupe for sale right now.

His cars are top dollar, but you'll be better off buying one of his cars than buying a car with needs. Remember, there is nothing more expensive than buying a "cheap" Mercedes-Benz.

My compliments on your taste in cars and happy new year.Regards, Axel J. Wulff610-731-5453 Cellular610-572-4611 Home

Happy New Year to you Carl..

I'm with Axel about Bruce Mendel (mr-amazing-deals on ebay). We have seen one of his cars last summer at an MB meet. It was nothing less than fantastic, to my mind..

There's also a '91 for sale on ebay currently. 45K miles that might pique your fancy.... Take a look.

No matter what.. Good luck & enjoy..

Cheers, MBL
