[W126 Coupe] Transmission "Clunk" - But only when selectingReverse Gear

Concur - it's about to die and needs a rebuild!
FYI, when my '87 560SEL tranny died a couple of years ago, it completely quit after backing out of a parking slot. Instantly no forward, no reverse. I asked the rebuilder what actually failed and he just walked over and pulled an o-ring off a part, then proceeded to break it into pieces. An MB tranny of this era now has hard, brittle o-rings in it.

Hello Mike,
Sadly, there isn't anything you can do..what you are describing is the initial signs of a transmission that's on it's way out. Fortunately, even if you lose reverse you'll still have your forward gears. My advice would be to try to park the car as though you do not have reverse..only using it when you Need it will help lengthen it's life.
In order to fix the problem the transmission needs to come and re-done.

On my 1988 560SEC the auto transmission (original) works great in forward gears, with very smooth change-ups. I've had the trans fluid changed at recommended intervals. But on selecting reverse gear there is a big clunk and the car initially jolts backwards, sometimes quite violently, with or without the brake pedal pressed.
I've searched the archives and can't see anything specific to reverse gear. Does anyone know if there is an adjustment or anything to remedy this ?
I'd not want to do anything that may affect the forward gears as they are currently very smooth, but appreciate any help if anyone else has had this.
Cheers,
Mike
