Happy new year to you too.
What an empressive sight, two of my most favourite Mercedes-Benz cars ever side by side in one driveway.
Thanks for sending them.
Originally Mercedes race cars were white. When the first Silver Arrows were built they were too heavy to be allowed in the race.
Engineers were at their wits end and finally it was decided to strip the paint and give the cars a good polish. The weight of the paint was sufficient to lose enough weight for the cars to compete. The rest is history, the Silver Arrows cleaned up just about every race they entered sometimes claiming the first four places in a given race. Mercedes-Benz finally dropped out of car racing I think it was in 1954 or 55 due to a terrible accident at Le Mans.

And do you know the story behind the bare aluminum ?
Let's hear it.
It's rather interesting.

The German racing color used to be white (French - blue, Spanish - yellow), but in the '30's Auto Union and Mercedes-Benz started racing their cars in the bare metal (mostly aluminium and magnesium bodies), which led to "silver" becoming the new racing color for Germany
