Thanks to all who responded - looks like the safe thing to do is replace the
pump.

As for the maintenance on a 24 year old car, mine has 84K on the odometer,
and it seems that most of the problems I have are age related. I love the
car, like the fact that much of the repair work is something that I can do
myself (for pleasure, not necessarily for cost savings), and at age 64 think
there is a strong chance I may never buy another car. Try that out on a
Volvo or other car - the plastics and finish will be long gone before SEC is
ready for the bone yard. BTW, this user group is one fantastic resource -
again, thanks.
