Yeh thanks, its just the access.... im not sure if its any different as yours is LHD but there is hardly any room up there, certainly not enough to get your hand up to the joint... i had to line it up with levers and use a long extension to tighten the bolt up...

Great, where was this 4 weeks ago? I just bought a refurb. I was going to do this myself, but just did not see how I would find the time. Great info though, I need to adjust the play a little. Thank you.
When I took my box out I marked the steering shaft spline, but was still off one tooth. Easy fix though.
Mark where you think the alignment should be on both, the steering shaft coupling and the gearbox input shaft.
Remove the bolt from the coupling. You should be able to slide the steering shaft up into the firewall just enough to turn it and slide it back on. Really is quite simple. You do not have to remove the gearbox again, but yes you are right, it takes two to reinstall that anchor. I gave myself a few cramps doing that by myself.
Thank You,

Hi Guys,
Well with the aid of this doc i just refurbed my steering box - http://www.davidpetryk.net/Mercedes/Steering.htm
I have to say the actual refurbing part was easy... the hard part was removing and refitting the box into the car, you need an assistant really as trying to line up the joints and hold the box at the same time is hard work.
The other issue i had is that getting the input gear in line when refitting is impossible... when i put it all back together the steering wheel was 90 degrees out... so i thought easy, ill just remove the steering wheel and set it straight... but no because now my indicators dont cancel properly!!
Thats a job for another day now!
Also changed the brake fluid while i was there... it was yucky... dont think its been changed in a while!
Hope the document helps someone... its really very accurate..
Thanks
Jay
