Iain,
I would pull the cylinder cover and see what position the valves are in
(i.e., intake and exhaust cam lobes on #1 should be both be up-valves
closed) with the harmonic balancer at TDC for #1. Then hand rotate
through the firing order to see what position other cylinder valves are
in as you go through the firing order. There may also be some signs of
trouble on the rails, slack chain or the cam sprocket teeth that will
indicate you've got a skipped chain. I have not heard of this on the
in-line motor but, have seen this kind of damage on my SLC V8...380
motor that I junked some years backs.
