As it was explained to me by those who know far more history, during
the 80's "factory wheels" were put on the cars by the two private
companies making the 560 cars "AMG". they were AMG east in Europe
and AMG West in Chicago. They determined what wheels would go on the
car since MB had no input. Because the work was so profitable and in
demand, MB purchased AMG East in Europe and starting producing the
AMG cars under their marquee. AMG West, left out in the cold, was
sold to a west coast investor who still works the brand as much as he
can given MB's dominance.

The wheels I have were purchased by the original owner when he had
the car "AMG'd" as it were. I still have the original bill of sale.
The car was purchased from AMG West and made over for J.D. Searle,
maker of aspertame, at a price of $105,000 with all of the
improvements plus the price of the car. Searle kept this car along
with many others for many years. He sold the car to his insurance
agent with about 19,000 miles (who is a car nut) who kept the car for
about 6 months before he sold it to me with about 26,000 miles. I
have had it ever since and plan to sell it after I fixed the
headliner and few other age related issues. Car currently has about
68,000 miles. I have never put the wheels on the ground, but had
them refurbished to sell as they had some curb rash. I just never
got around to selling them, but would like to know just to clear out
the any extraneous material in my basement so i will let them go for
any reasonable offer.
