Josh;
1. The comment on solder joints is valid. To repair you remove the climate control unit.
However, DO replace the 30Amp strip fuse. That is the power to your fan. When this fuse becomes a problem SOMETIMES the contacts become intermittent and melt their little after-thought fuse box... sometimes cooking the wires at the same time. I have replaced that fuse holder box and fuse complete in my cars. Cheap. Less than $3. The fuse is 000 545 20 34 , 30Amp from any dealer or MB parts supplier. And yes, DO replace all of the "normal" fuses in your fusebox. Good idea every couple of years... everybody SAYS that, but almost nobody DOES (I don't. I enjoy the challenge of holding a flashlight in my teeth while swearing at these crappy pre-WW2 vintage fuses in the pouring rain.... the fuses you need friggin tweezers and three hands to install.)
2. High beam not working? First check that your H4 bulbs are OK. Highly unlikely that both highbeams are burnt out but takes 2 minutes to check and may save minor grief of removing the steering wheel. Getting at the signal/light assembly is not a huge deal assuming that your '85 is NOT equipped with airbags. To remove the steering wheel pop off the M-B plastic symbol center of the wheel. Use a 10mm hex to remove the center bolt. Do NOT rely on the steering lock to hold the wheel against the force needed to undo this bolt... it's tight and you can damage the locking mechanism. When the bolt is removed, mark the wheel against the shaft accurately in order to get the wheel back in the same position. The steering wheel pulls off the spline shaft and the removal of the turn signal assembly should be fairly obvious. If this assembly is badly worn, a new assembly is not THAT expensive.... around $145.
4. The rear defroster switch symbol should light up and stay "on" for the duration of the timer in the relay.
Just some random thoughts off the top of my head... Good luck.
