[W126 Coupe] Engine replacement for 1983 500 SEC

Because the LS6 is better than a Dodge Hemi or any Ford.

Designed in 2001, cast in thinwall steel liners, triple knock sensors feeding a very powerful Engine Control Module computer thingy, broken connecting rods, roller cam/rockers, double timing chain & titanium pushrods, sodium filled exhaust valves, electric water pump, full electronic control of the injectors and the eight coil packs, aluminum block, heads, & oil pan construction that weighs 390 pounds vs. 452 for the M117, etc. etc. The width is about 1/4" different from the M117 and it's about 3/4" longer, but 60 pounds lighter.

Got a custom built 4L60E 4-speed electronic transmission that will hold the 480 HP (dyno'd number) that this engine puts out. The custom built tranny, with torque converter, was under $1,500, $150 for a 200 amp alternator, about $400 for a brand new AC compressor. Spark plugs, plug wires, and tubular stainless steel headers available at any auto parts store - no special order parts from Germany needed. Rebuilt rack & pinion for a Caddy/Poncho cost all of $225.

Bolt on supercharger kit is a phone call away. One call, it shows up at the house ready to bolt on. I can't use one because the factory says that the stock engine long block is good for up to 530 HP and the supercharger will put me too far above it. Great problem to have, eh?? :-)

Hemi? Nope, I'm happy with my LS6.

Later,
Mike R

Why a Chevy? Why not a Hemi? or better yet a Ford.

I'm sure Mike R will chime in soon, as he is in the middle of an LS6 conversion in his SEC....

I’ve recently purchased my first Mercedes Benz; a very nice 1983 SEC 500 from a friend. The car is in outstanding condition20cosmetically. The original owner has spend consider money in maintaining the engine over the years. It has about 200K miles and runs only fair in my opinion. I’d like to boost the performance and reliability by replacing out the engine and was thinking of a newer Corvette motor as a viable replacement engine. Any advice/recommendations on engine replacement options would very welcome.

Thanks! Michael
