[W126 Coupe] wheel and tire size

To me, 18"s are perfect (best of both worlds), but again, it depends on what
you expect and what other cars you normally drive.

So I am hearing that 17" would be the best of both worlds and work just fine
with H&R lower springs and Bilstein shocks?

I've got 16" and 18" rims and tires for sale..
16s are really cushy, but good for straight-line and are usually lighter,
18s are really stiff, but MUCH better for cornering. I wouldn't drive
anything less than 17" IMHO.
My 18s were pretty comfy, but it depends on what you are used to, and what
you are looking for.
Regards,
Edward

I've driven SECs with 14", 15", 16", 17", 18", and 19" rims. The 19's were
too harsh. Some of the 18" rims were too hard, some weren't. The 14-16" rim
setups were too soft and floaty for me.
My SEC has H&R springs and 18" rims and it's great. I put those rims on my
lowered SEL and they're still just fine. The key is the tires. A 560SEL
doesn't go particularly fast so I put "H" rated 18" Hankook tires
(245/40/18) on it. THAT is why it's fine. "Z" rated tires would be too hard
in this application, for a street only car.
My FrankenBenz (560SEC with a GM Z06 LS6 motor in it) will *have* to have
"Z" rated rubber and is going to be harsh. C'est la vie.

Really depends on your driving style, preferences, road conditions.
I have 15's, 16's and 18's. The 18's are "harsh" and not forgiving on
crappy roads. The 16's are a marked improvement over the 15's, especially
with lower offsets. Can't speak to the 17's as I have never had them on a
car.
