Rear bearing ARE pressed in, but not that hard to change anyway, they do NOT
last forever. Their condition is relatively easy to diagnose though.
Spin wheel, check smoothness, check for sounds/whine.
Grab wheel and shake it hard and feel for any give.
Check condition of bearing grease.
There is a gauge to actually check the condition, but it’s a bit of over
kill.
Furthermore, the bearings are SHOULD NOT BE difficult for any experienced
mechanic, MB specialist or not; this can either be an indication of your
mechanic’s honesty (you don’t need them and he won’t do it for you), or his
lack of expertise (makes such claims to avoid doing the job and having you
go somewhere else for it).
Regards,
Eddie

How would one go about changing the rear bearings in a 1988 560sec. Or a
better question - do you think that it s necessary. My car had sat for three
years in Pennsylvania so after replacing gas tank, fuel distributor,
injectors, brakes and many more things I thought it would be good idea to
replace the bearings front and back at the same time the brakes were
replaced. My Mechanic told me today that the rear bearings are pressed
in and he could not replace them and said he did not think they needed to
be replaced - that rear bearings should last forever?
Thank you
Kelly
