Louis:

I had a similar instance with a 560sel sedan. I went to the dealer and they said it's fine. It showed no diagnostic check error. The bag itself is probably fine, if anything you might need to get the circuit checked. I think the circuit is tested everytime you turn your key on. If you take it to a dealer to get a function test, that should show due diligence on your part in case of an accident.

Regards,

Joe

I saw some correspondence a month or so ago about air bag replacement, but just got around to noticing that I have 2 nice big original notices on my door jamb telling me that the bags on my 1990 560SEC should have been replaced by 2004.

Hence a visit to the local MB dealer for a price check which revealed $1480 + installation for the driver side and $2680+ installation for the passenger side (the higher total being, among other things, because his computer showed that they don't even have the passenger side in stock in Germany, and would have to apparently make one for me.) I kid you not.

Hence my inquiry to you-all to see if there is an alternative to enable me to cheat death by updating at least the Driver's side for a more reasonable amount. I promise to drive carefully while waiting for a reply.
