Yep. The symptoms described are consistent with a missing ground, and at 
least one of the grounds in the cluster is carried by a copper foil. I'd 
not say the cluster is "toast," but some some jumper wires may have to 
be soldered in to route across the now-melted foil. That's easy -- once 
the cluster is out.
