As many as it takes to keep the battery charged, up to a limit of 50 or 
60 Amps. The actual current depends on the engine RPM and the state of 
charge of the battery. If, at about 1500 RPM or above, it will charge 
the battery to over 14.0 volts (as much as 14.5 if of 
lead/calcium/antimony construction), then it is charging OK. See also
