[W126 Coupe] Richard into law school

Richard:
Congratulations on your law school acceptance, William & Mary is a fine
place to get that degree. Obviously you were being facetious when you asked what
to do in your spare time. When people asked me what law school was like, I
have a one-word description...Relentless.
It's likely the most difficult intellectual endeavour you will ever
undertake. Best of luck, study hard, and stay tightly focused.

I am in the last stages of restoring a '85 500SEC. Now, I am focusing on
the interior. The door panels (front and rear) are in very good shape.
However leather on the front and back seats needs to be replaced as well as
the headliner. Who has had the covers replaced and what are, if any, are
the issues? Also, who is the best supplier of the leather covers? You can
contact me directly at whgreene at columbus.rr.com. By the way, the car is in
Charlotte, NC.

Geez, it has been 4 yrs???? I remember when you first jumped on this list
before graduating high school!
Some serious congratulations on getting into law school, especially into
W&M, best of luck to you. (see, I can be nice, not once did I make a comment
about having another lawyer in the world....!)
take care,

Thanks. It came down between here and some other schools, but W&M gave me a
nice little fellowship offer so I took it. I'm glad they did because I think
I like it here a lot more than I would have liked it at those other schools.

My 560 SEC is an 89 with 66,000 miles on it. I've enjoyed the 1st gear
start kit for several years now. The other day my transmission started
shifting down to second gear all on its own. It happened at speeds of
around 45 to 50. Then it would refuse to shift back to 3rd. If I came to a
complete stop and started driving again it would go through the gears and
then shift down to 2nd again.
Any suggestions?? Do you think it is electric or a vacuum problem? Might
it be related to the 1st gear start module?
Any help would be appreciated.

William,
Your best bet is to get an interior kit from GAHH and bring that to an
upholstery shop that can do any necessary tweaking to make the fit
factory perfect.
As for the headliner, you won't be able to find a material exactly like
OE, but again I believe GAHH has a nice substitute. Or, you could cover
it in leather or suede a-la AMG.

Hello Gordon,
I would pull the connection to your kick down switch for starters. I'll
assume you have checked and corrected your transmission fluid level if
necessary.
You could try disconnecting the FGS worst case.
Worst case I would think you have an internal leak allowing transmission
pressure to drop as it gets warm.

I've had a similar problem on a 300E and my 560SEC. The cure in both cases
was to change the transmission fluid and filter. The problem disappeared.
MB transmissions seem to be very sensitive to dirty fluid.
YMMV.

Hi folks. It appears my tach has died (at least according to the indy
mechanic who is evaluating my car). Anyone have a source for a new or
known good used one for my 87 560SEC?
Thanks,
Ike

Hi guys,
unfortunately it turns out its the head gasket, the guy didn't want to
do the job either but he was getting on a bit. He put a hose with a
funnel in it onto the radiator cap and let the engine run for a while,
topping it up with water every now and again. after a while bubbles
started appearing and when he revved it more bubbles would surface. Does
this sound like a scientific enough way to determine if its the head
gaskets need replacing ? He seemed knowledgable and was recommended,
didn't charge me either for the 30 mins he worked on it.
Am i right in thinking this jobs needs to be done at least once in a

thanks

Dick,
As luck would have it the brakes were due for changing several days before
yesterdays ago. Can you pull the front hubs off without removing the front
caliper first?

Girdon,
You might want to test the kickdown solenoid in the back of the
transmission.
It is basically an electrical solenoid that, when energized, throws the
transmission into first.
If it or the valve that it controls is sticky then the trans will exhibit
odd behavior.

See if they can put the tailpipe emissions test probe into the overflow tank
- any readings of HC, CO, or NO is definitive proof of a blown head gasket.

Hi Oisin:
He's probably got it right. If you wanted to be a bit more thorough you
could perform a leak down test and depending on the results follow with
a wet and dry compression test on each cylinder.
Best to have this problem resolved and not wait too long. Were there
any signs of oil (white/grey sludge) on the coolant cap? Are there any
signs of anti-freeze mixed in with the engine oil on the oil filer cap
or dipstick? If yes to either of these then the job should be done soon
to avoid other problems that could involve the lower end on that engine.
Regards,
Dick

Oisin,
In addition to what Dick said concerning the lower end, when there is a
breach in the gasket between coolant or oil galleys or even the combustion
chamber, coolant will flow through that breach and cause the cylinder head
surface to erode. Minor erosions can be filled and resurfaced, but if it's
too bad the head will have to be replaced.
To give you an idea what's involved:

I am in the last stages of restoring a '85 500SEC. Now, I am focusing on
the interior. The door panels (front and rear) are in very good shape.
However leather on the front and back seats needs to be replaced as well as
the headliner. Who has had the covers replaced and what are, if any, are
the issues? Also, who is the best supplier of the leather covers? You can
contact me directly at whgreene at columbus.rr.com. By the way, the car is in

Sounds like a bad engine to me - too much disparity in the pressure
readings. You need an LS6 and a 4L60E to put in there now.
OK, the truth - you're fine. Usually 5-7 pound difference in readings are
normal. 170 pounds for a "low" is quite good.
