Hi Oisin:

He's probably got it right. If you wanted to be a bit more thorough you
could perform a leak down test and depending on the results follow with
a wet and dry compression test on each cylinder.

Best to have this problem resolved and not wait too long. Were there
any signs of oil (white/grey sludge) on the coolant cap? Are there any
signs of anti-freeze mixed in with the engine oil on the oil filer cap
or dipstick? If yes to either of these then the job should be done soon
to avoid other problems that could involve the lower end on that engine.
