Having bought a Japanese to US 560 SEC last year about this time I can
verify the issues with VIN, DOT conversions, and potential insurance/liability
claims.
Here, Texas required the car be inspected by an auto theft task force unit
to verify ALL (including the license plate holder, which by the way did not
match and was the first thing they inspected) of the VIN's matched and that the
VIN was not on ANY international stolen car watch list. Since the Port of
Houston is the largest containerized shipping destination in the US, there is a
huge traffic in stolen vehicles via shipping and maybe they are just super
conscious of that. Everyone who had a role in the registration process looked
at all the paperwork about three times before they would stamp it approved.
My insurance carrier has been USAA since the late 1960's and since the VIN
was not verifiable through their database, they did not want to insure the car
nor did the State of Texas want to register it for the same reason. The net
result was that it took 4 trips to the DMV and numerous calls to the seller in
Los Angeles before I was finally able to gather all of the paperwork
necessary to register the car.
There are plenty of cars available in the U.S. and even if the one you are
asking about is free, it is still going to cost more than it's worth.
