[W126 Coupe] Japan/Canadian 560 Import

I just met a person yesterday with an '82 500SEC euro car that brought the car in from France. (Still has the French license plate on the front.) It is licensed and insured here in Florida. This car has had NO modifications done to it. Still has the euro lights, bumpers, no cats and even still has the original speedometer that reads in kilometers, which by the way shows only 140,000. 

The lady and her husband retired here but are from Amsterdam They kept the car stored at a friend's air-conditioned garage in France for a number of years to have when they travelled back to europe. They also have a 2007 Chrysler Sebring convertible and a 2001 SLK 320 they bought here. When they bought the SLK they were going to trade the SEC on it but the dealer here only offered them $500 for it. 

This car has original paint ( I think it is called fire mist red; a kind of burnt orange metallic) in excellent condition., no dents or dings. interior is near mint and is in great running condition with $6,000 in work done over the past year. Her husband is now disabled and no longer drives. So having three cars and only garage space for two, she is thinking about selling the SEC. Any idea as to what it might be worth?

One MAJOR problem I can see coming up here. You can get easily the car into the U.S. and likely get it registered somewhere without going through a Registered Importer to get the DOT and EPA releases. Here’s your problem – you have a high dollar car with a non-U.S. VIN number. 

 

If you get involved in an accident (anybody’s fault) and their insurance company is smart enough to call DOT to verify the status of your car, you just became the cause of the accident whether you caused it or not (would not have been an accident had your illegal car not been on the road) and your insurance WILL be canceled immediately and retroactively. A friend in the DOT office say’s they get several calls a day on exactly this.
