If it looks like pictures of horns, it is to switch between "city" and
"country" horns. Too the horn briefly, then hit the switch, then toot the horn
again, and you should hear a difference.

I am preparing my '91 560 sec, black over maroon / AMG 18's , 105k,
for sale. I am not mechanically inclined or have the time to learn to
keep it as nice as it is now as the miles add up. Runs fine. Waiting
for some decent weather and time to clean it up a little a nd take pics
first before going to ebay, not a garage queen though, just a daily
driver. Will be asking under $ 10k when ready. Car in eastern Ohio.
Certainly favor interested forum members .

Howdy folks,
The Southwest meet sounds great...I think I would drive to Vegas if the
timing was right....September would be out for me because that's the month
of the Monterey Jazz Festival's Fifty year Anniverary and they are having a
great show.
Keep me posted.

I'm sorry, I don't. If you drive south from Easton on Route 611and then
follow Route 32 along the Delaware River., you'll see it on the river side
of the road. It's a great Weekend drive anyway, so take the SEC. Ottsville
is a little hamlet. The garage was a car dealership, and has big windows
facing the road.

It had finally gotten to the point where I could no longer hold off on
getting my valve guides & seals done and repairing a broken sunroof rail.
So I bit the bullet and drove the car almost 3 hours to a shop somebody on
this site recommended in the LA area. They test drove the car and this is
what they came up with in addition to the valves and sunroof: leaking
radiator, 1 fuel pump leaking, idler control arm bushing (cause of my front
end creak) and gas door vacuum element (what fun when running on empty and
your gas door solenoid won't fully engage). The total cost for all this,
including tax, is around $5,300. I also had to rent a car for 3 weeks (just

figure out why the AC belt keeps shredding but once this is done, all I
have left is some body work and a new paint job and some leather repair.
Frankly, I think the wiser choice is to go with what I have and know.

P1800 out there, the new C30 is awesome..not available in the US yet. I
drove a Turbo Diesel 5 speed (all nomenclature and digital readouts were in
Swedish)..great pickup, solid suspension and this thing was getting 62mpg
hwy driving. It didn't meet CA emissions so Volvo won't sell it in the US
yet. Gas version should be out first. I'm 6'2" 245 pounds and the seat felt
good with enough legroom.

I saw the car recently at our Long Boat Key get together and can say that
this car is pristine in every way. The engine looked clean enough to serve
dinner on. I was shocked when Joe told me how many miles are on it. The car truly
looks like less than 50K. I believe he has even won a few concours with
it.Jay

If you are looking for an exceptional 560SEC, youll
have to look outside your backyard. I looked at 32
SECs before I found this one. If you want a nice car
thats next door, maybe you might try to find something
a little newer where a selection of quality cars would
be more widespread. Just a suggestion.

Joe

I would like to buy an owner's hand book for a 1985/6 420 SEC (a 500 or 560
would probably do)
I want to read up on the general things applicable to my car. The two big
shop manuals I have don't give ordinary information (such as an illustration
of the console explaining what the controls do.)
Has anyone got one for sale, please?

Hi Jack,

I don't have one for sale (I guess you better register a "favourite
search" on eBay for
that one) but I just thought I'd tell you that there is, in fact,
only one owners handbook that
covers all 420/500/560 SE/SEL/SEC models. However, they did bring out
a new one to cover the post 1986
models, but the 420SEC only came out in 1986, so it should cover you.

The 420SEC is very rare, I've never seen one in South Africa. (then
again, so are most
post-1986 models) - by far the most common around here are pre-1986
380SEC and 500SEC.
(most easily spotted by their smaller, "ribbed" lower side panels and
smaller bumpers)

Mercedes seems to protect their bodies quite well with cavity wax &
underbody coatings, but in my experiance if there is a minute flaw, the steel
seems to rust with a vengance. If my old Rover (SD1 1979)or the GM Commodore
I used to own gets a scratch or stone chip it just seems to surface rust
lightly and stays that way
For example I was underneath the car adjusting the modulator, when I
noticed a brown stain on the bottom door rail locating the rubber
moulding,(being white is definatly a plus when detecting rust).
Removing the seal exposed the rust that had been"festering away"and what
initially looked to be surface turned out to be perforated requiring steel
to be welded in.

In typical Mercedes style the whole bottom section is a series of
compound curves and indentations obviously to give strenght but is a
challenge to manufacture
steel patch pieces.Having made a new rail ,and a piece for behind the
rubber,I was fortunate to have a friend who is an expert welder and was able
to do the job without removing the door.
I am going to try a lanolin based rust treatment for inside of the door
as the cavity wax appears to shrink and develop hairline cracks in high
temperatures after a while.
Hopefully this is the last rust discovery,I hate looking for something I
don't want to find.

Kind Regards Dan Gardner 1986 560 SEC(euro 220kw)
