I'm not sure the two symptoms are related. The lamps in the little
pencil-sized testers are quite small. It takes very little current to
light them. If you were drawing significant current, there would be
enough to light a brake lamp -- you might try holding one of THOSE lamps
between battery negative and ground.

Report back if a brake lamp glows white, yellow, orange, or not at all
when placed in series with the battery.
