[W126 Coupe] A/C charge/conversion

Well, its getting hot now a days, and I am noticing that the A/C is not as
cold as I think it should be. It does get cold, but nowhere near enough to
cool the cabin to a reasonable temp. I am assuming that it may need to be
'recharged'. However my car as not been converted to run on R134a. At my
local auto parts store, they had all the R134a cans and recharge kits, and
they had these conversion kits. Now I did a little searching on the archives
(a lot of FIXING broken A/Cs, but didn't see much on recharging kinda
working systems), but from what I can tell, I would need to make sure I put
in new compressor oil thats compatible with R134a, and replace a few
components. Is this truly all I need to do, or would it be better for me to
just take my car to my mechanic and have this done? The guy at the store
mentioned that I would need to vacuum pump to suck all the old R12 out of
the car. I don't have one of those, assuming I really need to do that
(sounds like a good idea).
Whats the approved way of doing this? Drive to Mexico and purchase R12? :-)
Thanks,
Tad
