The symptom that leads me to suspect a decayed rubber tube is that it 
takes forever for the HVAC to notice the cabin temperature. For example, 
it gets WAY too hot before the heat shuts off, and then WAY too cold 
before it comes on again.

I suppose I could fish out the little sensor and let it hang from the 
roof...

Hmm, there is a fair amount of empty space up there -- maybe I should 
look into moving the aspirator blower?
