The question can be easily answered with a magnet.
I have a '91 sel, the trunk lid is aluminum the engine hood is steel and
both original.

Also, I believe all hoods for the SECs are made of aluminium.
Not so for SE/SEL/SD/SDL, where some models have steel hoods (and trunk
lids).
The aluminium hoods are lighter and use a weaker spring. If you put a weak
spring with a steel hood, it won't stay open. If you put a strong spring
with an aluminium hood, it may snap open so fast it'll bend.
