Hi Bellamy.  Thanks for your input and advice (and that of  others).  I have 
passed all this info to my son and after going through the  advice and a 
second look at the car, he has definitely decided against buying  it.  This car was 
described as a # 3 (close to a #2) but I would say it is  a #4 (close to a 
#5)...bad.

Part of your issue depends on where you live.  You are  saying $12,000 
(US$11,200).  Is it a Westcoast car, or an "Eastern  Bunny".  Is the exhaust system 
and OEM Mercedes or Bob's Muffler  
Guaranteed-For-Life-Providing-You-Can-Find-The-Original-Receipt-And-Bob-Is-Still-Alive  aftermarket one?  (It's one 
little indicator that someone has cared about  maintaining the car, and had enough 
$$ to do it properly.) etc
