[W126 Coupe] Newbie question

Hello, I have always been fascinated by MB espcially the W126. I am finally ready to get one. I am looking to get a second generation W126. Is the 300E underpowered to drive ? compared to the V8's and is the difference between the 420 and 560 noticeable? also is it simpler to maintain a short wheel base non L car with an inline six? and thirdly I realize the importance of maintence but is there a mileage based maintenace schedule for the W126 similar to something followed by BMW enthusiasts for those cars.
