I agree that Area "U" is probably best for our purposes, call me when you
want to discuss in more detail.

Hi Rick,

This is the thread where I found the rear suspension advice from
"Chris". It's buried in here about 1/3 the way in. Looks like you may
need to register to find out his email/details.
http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php?p=552775#post552775

There's another reference to it here, suggesting he is called Chris
Goodwin :
http://mercedesshop.com/shopforum/archive/index.php/t-48451.html

I think you're right to repair rather than replace, although if the
hydraulic rams ever went bad, replacing would be a lot cheaper.
Good luck with the car.
Cheers,
Mike

Thanks to Mike Taylor for posting the info from 'Chris' from another
posting. It helps clear things up a lot for me on the rear suspension.
I would rather repair than replace the rear suspension system. If you
could, I would appreciate your finding the'Chris' posting so that I may
communicate with him further, concerning the suspension.
Many thanks to all who supplied info on my request for help. I really
appreciate this 'ready pool' of affection ados to help with my 560SEC.
The car is wonderful - when operating properly.

Hey Doug,

Glad to hear you're back in Houston! Memorial Park is a great location
for a gathering of MB Coupes. Just say when and I'll be there, rain or

Thanks Jorge. Rob Dent from Colorado can't make the Aug 11th date and
the 11th is not cut in stone it was just the first pass. Can those of
you that are interested in the Houston gathering throw back an e mail to
the group and let us know that the 11th is a good date or should we get
a consensus from the largest number of people for the best date. If
so, add to your name that the 11th, 18th, or 25th is better for you.

I will check the park tomorrow (Friday) to determine good spots and
discuss with Willard Treadway and by then we should have a good date
from the group and by next week I can secure the area.

I look forward to hearing from you.

My '86 SEC 420 which came from Hong Kong, does not seem to have a rheostat
device to adjust the brightness of the dash lights. Is this normal? There
is
one on my son's 1972 6.3.
Also my passengers seat adjustment won't raise or lower (it is stuck in the
highest position) the other adjustments work OK. Could this be a fuse or is
something jammed?

Hi Jack:

Dash dimmer can't help. On the seat, try working the door switch firmly
in both the up and down position several times. It just may be that the
switch needs to be cleaned. Don't push where it breaks but, work the
switch hard from one stop to the next up and down.

If this does not work, next check and rotate fuses 15, A, & B. Then
slide the seat rearward and check the plug in harness. Failing any of
these remedies, slide seat forward all the way, unblot the floor bolts
(2); slide the seat rearward and unbolt the front floor bolts(20.
Unplug the harnesses and vacuum line. Remove the seat. Then using a
12VDC source (brown is common) run through the harness pin-outs to see
if you can get that motor to fire. There are two motors under there and
both have a cable set-up. I've had one where the seat switch caused the
motor to turn and the cable fitment was loose so the seat would not move
properly. You've just got to pull the seat and work the various
electrical connections to see if it's the seat or the door switch.

Let me know what you test and learn.

Dick

Hi Jack;

I have never seen a 126 with no rheostat for the dash lights. Can you turn
your odometer re-set push knob? Does it sound like your fingernails on
window screen? While turning this knob do the dash lights remain at the
same
brightness? If "yes to all", you need a new rheostat OR someone has
bypassed
the rheostat, or both.

When you activate the seat up/down switch can you hear the motor under the
seat running? (The drive cable is worn out or broken). Does the seat try
to
move but doesn't? (mechanism jamming) Does the motor make no noise at all
when activated? (Likely defective switch, broken or bad contact... there
is no
separate fuse for each seat motor)

Well, too good to be true indeed seems to be just that! Took the car out
again and the leak that I thought I had fixed with sealant in the front
passenger side drain at the base corner of the windscreen is still leaking
slightly, and I think i need to get it fixed properly.

I couldn't access it properly as the base of the windscreen and what looks
like the braket that secures the windscreen is right in the way. Anyway,
the tray that collects the water is rotted and will need repairing.

So, my question is what is actually required to rectify the problem? Does
the rusted metal need to be cut away and replaced (if so I would imagine
the
Windscreen, dash and other close compnents need to be removed and thus I
would hazard a guess that it's a pretty big job)? Or is there a simpler
way
to do it?

This is a real pain in the proverbial as I can't drive the car without
getting this sorted - as we are only expecting one (!) rain free day in
july/august in the UK!

Again, thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Brad:

I think you need to give the coupe a good looking over for other rust
areas. Check the front suspension mounts above the dog bones, check the
trailing arms on the rear suspension, check under the battery support
plate, check along each of the fender wells and rockers, check inside
the trunk up under the rear glass in either corner. If it turns out you
have rust in several other places, you can get a professional opinion on
'weather' to fix or unfortunately stop burning pounds and sell the beast
and start looking for another.

If however, the area you have found is the only bad spot, I have some
photos that may be of some help as a visual aid to what you are going to
need to do. At the least you will need to remove battery and tray,
wiper arms and the wiper transmission cover just under the windshield,
then remove the windshield and the wiper parking heated bladder. This
should give you full access to the area you describe. Only a pro will
tell you how to get rid of that rust area. You could cover it up with
fiberglass but, the problem will likely reappear in short order.

Good luck,

Dick

Hi All, I took a look at the various picnic areas in Memorial Park. I
think that there are two that would be great. Good tree coverage, picnic
tables, charcoal pits, rest rooms and parking adjacent to the sites. We
can not reserve parking but we can try to tape off an area until we are
told to remove it.

Willard, please take a look at site U or V on the site plan and see if
you agree that U is the preferred site because it is not as accessible
as V and I think we could be more successful in securing parking spaces
since V is closer to the entrance and I believe would fill up more
quickly with other park visitors.. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

As I mentioned in a previous e mail please let me know what date is best
for each of you so we can maximize attendance. The proposed dates are
Aug, 11th, 18th, or 25th. Both sites are available on all dates at this
moment. If you can let us know which date(s) works best over the
weekend, I can take a check by the parks office next week and we can
move forward.

Thanks

Doug

Doug,

I originally spoke to you about hooking up when I got back into the states
in late
July (I was the one coming in from Denver). Still a go for me, sometime
between
August 11 and early September works, I just need to schedule.

Will be bringing my white widebody SEC, will try to convince my friend in
Houston
to show up with his black widebody.

Well, seeing as you can no longer purchase them new, your best bet is to
find a set off of a C36 or C43. I've been using 17 X 8.5 w/ an ET of 30
w/o major issue. Only thing you may want to consider is running a 5mm
spacer (the thinnest they make) in the rear to get the wheels sitting
flush w/ the fender flares.

Good Luck!

Hey Doug,
