Richard and others who are interested:

The last I talked to Doug, he was trying to target a date in August...not
July. However, since he is organizing this I expect he will be posting an update
when he returns from vacation. If I get anything new in the interim, I will
post the info as soon as I get it.

I sent a message last week but for some reason it never appeared so, here it
is again.

Doug Gavin is organizing the Houston event and I've volunteered to assist
while Doug is on vacation. Last Saturday I toured Memorial Park (centrally
located near I-10 and Loop 610 West) and faxed Doug a map indicating which
areas might best suit our needs (parking, picnic facilities, shade, etc). I
understand that he will contact the parks department to reserve an area for
us on some weekend in August. I expect that he will be asking for dates from
everyone as soon as he returns from vacation.

That's as much as I know right now,

Dear Larry, Neil, Tim and Anyone Else:
I have checked for vacuum leaks and found none so far using my mytvac and
vac. gauge. The vac. gauge at idle reads 21 inches+ - 1/4 to 1/2 bar(slow)
fluctuation. Is this acceptable or point to a slight leak and would this give
me a
300 rpm idle problem( 850 at idle)? I removed and cleaned the fuel
distributor, plunger and air valve mechanism. There was some varnish but the
plunger
was working fine. I also replaced the injector seals as the fuel lines were
off
and these I thought were a possible area for vac. leaks. I also removed the

cold start valve reattached the fuel line and with ign. on tested for a
possible fuel leak-checked good. I sprayed water over the engine at idle to
try
and detect a leak and found no change in vac. reading. I am beginning to
think
my problem may lie elsewhere such as the idle control unit(ICU). Everyone
has advised that there is no sure way to test without special equip. so I
guess
my next step is to bite the bullet and buy one unless someone can point to
something else I can try.
By the way , I really to appreciate all the advice I have received.
Thanks!!

What year is your SEC?

What is the condition of your Overvoltage Protection Relay? Test this
first. Test your engine temp sensor that influences cold start. And
depending on year, you may have warm up regulator issues and then again
perhaps not.

As for the Idle Control Module, the PC board can be removed from it's
case and plugged back into the harness. Then carefully with engine at
idle grab a hold of the PC board and gently press components to cause
the board to flex slightly. The only caution is to not allow the board
to contact the chassis in any way when doing this test. If your idle
changes up or down as a direct result of flexing the board, the board
needs repair or replacement.

The fuel distributor plunger only needs to be removed if the seal is
bad. Otherwise it is best to leave the fuel distributor alone. Is your
idle steady at 850 or hunting between 650-850? Did you test the
throttle position sensor?

Good luck.

Dick,
I replaced the over voltage protection relay previously because it started
giving me a 1100 rpm idle problem and ABS light on . I would tap the old
one
and idle would drop but only to 850 rpm.I still have idle at 850.The idle is

absolutely steady at 850 no wavering. It is almost like the timing is set
too
far after TDC but this seems incorrect as timing is done electronically. I
do
have a concern about the cold start sensor because at start up the engine
seems to be at 850 whether cold(start up) or hot-no drop off of rpm during
warm
up but would this still give me a high idle after coming up to temp? Is
there a way to test this sensor? Also,I only checked the fuel distributor
valve
to make sure it wasn't sticking. I did not remove it as I read the
precaution
note in the spec. I am willing to do certain things and some things I don't

touch. The Idle control unit is under the passenger floor panel and I
thought
this was a sealed unit.
Regards,
John K.

Where exactly is the Auburn Hills Gun Club? A street address will do to get
directions on Mapquest. It may be within striking distance for me.

Alec,

I can't believe a 95 Lexus LS400 doesn't have ABS! Are you sure?
I mean, even a 1995 Honda Ballade (Civic for our American friends)
had ABS as standard on the top of the range (180E) model, my mother
used to drive one :-)

Regarding the higher spec, I'm also not quite so sure how this applies
to the 560SEC... The americans got a bit short-ended (mechanically) by
getting, as standard, a lower-powered car which also did not have the
capability
to start in first gear... But I guess, features-wise, your statement
is correct.

I was also under the impression that the memory seats were a feature
of 1986 and
later models, but if Jim says his 1985 (which I presume is the model
with the
corrugated side panels, not the smooth ones on later models) has it,
then I stand
corrected :-)

Dick,
1989, 80k miles. I have had the car about 3 months and the idle problem(850

rpm)was there when I bought it. At that time, I wasn't aware that 850 wasn't

the correct setting. I have driven it 75 miles since purchase.

Yes, my '85 US spec 500SEC has memory for the seats as well, and its build
date as 12/1984, so a fairly early '85 model.

Hi John:

Test the coolant temp sensor which is the 4-pole on an 89. The
following presumes you have the manual, if not let me know. The chart
for B11/2 resistance readings is found in 073-121, page 31. Test the
sender for both diagonal terminals. Then complete the harness test (n)
that follows. Are the readings in range?

I thought it was an email list, and variety is the spice of life. There
is only so much discussion of first-gear-start-kits and
fast-idle-problems before it gets boring. Diversity makes it more life-like.

Check the gaskets around the tail-lights. I had a problem there. Jack OZ
