Another comment on Differences, '85 500SEC vs '88 560SEC
 
Sunroof in '85 is open/close, no tilt.  The control is on the dash, not the ceiling panel.  This is a significant difference; tilt can be highly appreciated particularly on long highway trips.
 
By the way, power seats were standard on all SEC's in N. America.  Not so in Europe.  Same for sunroof, air, climate control.  And ABS is standard on W126's from '85 in N. America (some '84's) but was standard in Europe on all W126's from '81.
 
Spoiler?  Too bad.  The only thing a spoiler really does well is spoil the classic SEC lines.  "Ricerized".  Cheap and nasty. Keeping up with the Kia's.  Like tailfins, a totally useless ornament to amuse the next generation.

It depends on what part of the world you are but basically here is the list of superficial differences I can think of:
 

the 500's have grooved lower door mouldings whilst the 560's are smooth.
the 560's have headlight wipers whilst 500's don't (not true in all markets)
the 560 has electrically operated rear blinds.
the 560 has ABS
then various interior improvements such as electrically adjustable seats in the 560
Boot Spoiler is an add-on extra.
The badge on the boot lid!!

Help!  I am close to buying a very nice 500SEC, 1985.  I own an 88 560SL, but am not as familiar with SECs.  Here is my first question, and yes, I am sure I will have more.
 
Everything I read and hear is that this car came with no options available.  All the pics I see look the asme - there is no rear spoiler;  yet the one I am looking at has a rear spoiler.  Is that an aftermarket add-on?  Does it mean the car is AMG?  (I assume not).
 
Also, how does the look (not the mechanics/engine, etc.) of the 560SEC differ from the 500SEC?
 
Need help from you experts.  Thanks very much.
